It's kinda like humans. When we're around people we like, we flourish! Put us with somebody we don't care for and it stunts our growth too.

Asparagus

For asparagus to really stretch its legs and grow tall and proud, y'all gotta plant it alongside some parsley, basil, nasturtiums, and marigolds. But steer clear of tucking it next to fennel (both the vegetable and the herb) or garlic.  Asparagus needs to be planted somewhere it's not gonna be disturbed since it grows back year after year.

Now, if you want basil to dance a jig in your garden, you best plant it close to some peppers (any kind will do), tomatoes, sage, thyme, and oregano.

Beans

Beans? Well, they just love being around folks like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, corn, cucumbers, peas, rosemary, strawberries, Swiss chard, tomatoes, thyme, and sage. But don't you dare plant those carrots near tomatoes, or they'll just sit there lookin' all stunted.

And hey, keep your beans away from chives, garlic, leeks, marigolds, onions, or peppers.

Beets

Now, if you're fixin' to grow some beets, you best plant 'em alongside onions, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kohlrabi, bush beans, and lettuce. But don't go planting beans and onions side by side, and keep those beets far away from pole beans and mustard greens.
